The Chicano Narrative is an inspiring course. In the class we read seven books, which were written by chicano authors. Through the books I was able to understand the traditional ways of mexican families, living in Mexico. In other words I was able to meet Major Learning Outcome 3 (Literary and Cultural knowledge). What also helped me meet MLO 3 was writing critical essays about the books we read in class. For example in one critical essay I wrote about the book, The Memories of Ana Calderon by Graciela Limón. In this essay one will be able to find how the people closest to the protagonist (Ana) are the ones who instill the idea of patriarchy. They make Ana believe that women are only good for working and having babies. Because of this critical essay, I was able to see how mexican families during the early/mid 1900’s were very traditional in the sense that woman had predetermined roles, laid out to them by not only society, but by their family. One thing that stood out was how similar the protagonists life’s are to the authors. During class lectures, we spent most of the time critically analyzing the book. Through these analysis we would talk about the author and their upbringings. A majority of the time wherever the author was born, that is where the protagonist of the book was born. Although I learned plenty in this class, I want to gain more knowledge about the many chicano authors and their books. Once I become educated about the different books, I will continue to read more books written by chicano authors, to further explore my learning experience.
