In this course we learned about the different Latin American countries. Our class was presented with 1500 years of the continents history. Everything, from the expeditions navigators like Christopher Columbus took to discover the americas, to each country gaining its independence, is what I learned in this course. This course covers Major Learning outcome 3, which is gaining a literary and cultural knowledge of Latin America. Although many things were taught in this class, the one thing that will always stick with me are the different characteristics each of the ancient civilizations of Mesoamerica shared. Even though they were all unique in their own ways, one could find nine things in common amongst all of them. For example, the use of hieroglyphic writing, maps, a solar calendar, astronomical knowledge, divine gods, use of maze, and human sacrifices. I was able to gain this knowledge from a quiz we took in class. Our professor, Dr, Fernandez, on the quiz asked us to define at least five of the common features shared amongst the mesoamerican civilizations. But as useful as this information was, I also gained the knowledge of the reasons why Latin America was formed in the first place. It had to do with, Political, Economic, Historical, Social, Linguistics, and psychological reasons. After this course I hope to further expand my understanding of how different hispanic culture is today compared to what it was during earlier times. Another course similar to this one was my GS214 Global History I: Ancient Times to 1500. This class also presents one with a history of the Latin America. But it only touches on it briefly, it goes more in depth with other continents. I hope to further my learning experience by taking more hispanic culture classes.
