SPAN 301
Comp/ Oral Practice
Course description
Continues to build proficiency as defined by the ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines. Content-based instruction develops communicative language skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing through readings and discussions of authentic Hispanic cultural and literary texts. For students with two or more years of Spanish or an intermediate level of Spanish language proficiency.
Spanish composition and Oral practice helped me build my proficiency in Spanish. We covered a variety of topics, all in the target language. With this course I was able to meet Major Learning outcome 1; Language proficiency. Here I was able to better my understanding of when to use the imperfect and the preterit. For our midterm we had to write a narrative using the imperfect and preterit to either give the story suspense or to advance it. The narrative was to be no shorter than one page front and back. Punctuation was extremely important; especially after spending a class going over the rules of when to use a colon, semicolon, and comma. I'm glad we went over this because as one of the Spanish tutors at the CLC, I often have students asking how to use the preterit and imperfect and how to know when to use one or the other. Because of this course, I can share what I learned, with my students. I am also grateful that we went over accent marks. For most Spanish majors this is a struggle. Thankfully I now know when a word needs an accent mark. One area I want to better is my writing. One assignment that helped me with this was our final. Here, we had to write a 1500 word argumentative paper along with a 1500 word narrative. Although the assignment was not easy I felt like it helped me. I plan to better my writing by reading more books in the target language and writing more essays. Capstone will make sure that I write an essay in Spanish.
