Major learning outcome 1 is the ability of speaking, listening, reading and writing at the Advanced level of language proficiency, as outlined by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL). I have met this learning outcome with SPAN 301 and SPAN 304. In this course we covered a variety of topics. This allowed us to practice communicating with others in Spanish. For our final assignment we were to give a five minute presentation about a topic of our choice. For my presentation I talked about my future. I was able to effectively communicate my topic in the target language.
In terms of listening, in SPAN 301, one had to pay very close attention to what the professor was saying in order to answer his follow up questions. There was one lecture where we talked about inclusionary practices. Our professor went around the room asking something that we learned about the topic. In Spanish, I was able to tell him that there are words in Spanish that we use to include people who identify as Chicano or Latino. For example the word Chicanx and Latinx. Both of these words are used to ensure inclusion without touching on gender. This information I learned based off of a video we watched in class. These different videos and conversations allowed me to meet this particular earning outcome.
In SPAN 304, we covered a variety of poems and narratives from latin american literature. Here I had the opportunity of reading poems from different literary movements. It was amazing to see how some poets used their poetry to talk about the social issues that were occurring or had occurred in their country. I learned that they used keywords to symbolize the issue they were writing about. Although the message wasn't clear, I learned to go back and reread the poem to come to an understanding of what the lyrical voice was trying to say. I was introduced to a variety of new words.
In SPAN 301 I had the chance of meeting the writing requirement of this MLO. For our final we were assigned two essays, each had to 1500 words in the Spanish. One of them was a persuasive essay, while the other was a narrative. For the persuasive essay, I chose to write about the benefits of bilingualism. For the narrative essay, I wrote about overcoming some obstacles I've encountered in my life. These essays pushed me to use the correct syntactic structure. It was important that one used the appropriate vocabulary to get their point across. Writing in the target language has always been a challenge but, these essay definitely helped me overcome this obstacle. Thankfully, I leaned to write better because I wouldn't have been able to write the twenty-five page paper in the target language for capstone.
