Major Learning Outcome 2
Students develop their knowledge of fundamental concepts in the fields of Hispanic and Applied Linguistics, and are able to apply them in the completion of research papers and data-driven small-scale research studies pertaining current issues in these areas.
I was able to meet MLO 2 with SPAN 345, SPAN 313, and SPAN 305. In both of these courses we went over morphology phonology, syntax, and semantics. SPAN 345 focused more on bilingualism and its different components. In SPAN 313 we focused more on the sound system of Spanish, the history of Spanish, advanced grammar, SpanishEnglish translation, and a general introduction to Spanish linguistics. Thanks to this course I can now provide specific example of all the information listed above. In this course we did multiple actives where we practiced expanding our Spanish vocabulary. In addition we spent time doing actives that helped us understand phonology, syntax, morphology and semantics. There was one assignment where focused on phonology. This helped me identify the different sounds of each letter. At first these things were hard to identify but after plenty of homework assignments and practice, I was able to comprehend it. Knowing these things allowed me to do well on my credentialing exams. SPAN 345 gave me the opportunity to see how some languages are underrepresented. For example Mapundungun, the language spoken amongst a small amount of habitants in south central Chile and west coast Argentina. In this class we gave a presentation about how this language is underrepresented. We also talked about its grammar, phonetic and writing system. It was sad to see how this language isn't supported politically. It was also interesting to see how this language doesn't have a specific writing system. In other words there is more than one. In SPAN 313 I had the opportunity of studying Spanish from Rio de la Plata. In another presentation, my group did research in regards to its phonology, morphology, and writing system. It was interesting to see the differences among Spanish from Rio de la Plata and Spanish spoken in the United States. Although linguistics can is a difficult part of Spanish, it was helpful that we went over a lot of activities in class. Without these activities, I don't think I would have been able to have success in the course.
SPAN 305 gave me the opportunity to explore vocabulary relating to the business world. This course taught me vocabulary to make an impression during an interview. I enjoyed learning Spanish that I could apply to the business world. One thing we did in this course that was memorable was write a letter to a company. Before this course, I had no idea on how to write a cover letter to a company. I hope to keep expanding my vocabulary and linguistic knowledge.
