I met Major Learning Outcome 4 with JAPN 308. In this course we talked about Japans popular culture. It was interesting seeing the differences and similarities between my Hispanic culture and Japanese culture. For example in Japan there are Television series that are known as Trendy dramas. In trendy dramas, the viewer is always left wanting more. In one of our classes we watched an episode of Long Vacation. This show featured two strangers who eventually fall in love. Along the way they encounter problems that intervenes with them falling in love. This reminds me of mexican novelas (soap operas). They both share the same drama and issues that occur in life. Although trendy dramas are different, in the sense that they have the focus of getting the viewer to buy the trendy clothes the characters of the show are wearing, they both still share some similarities.
One thing that is valued in Japan is Akihabara. In Japan, individuals value video games as well, like Pokemon and others. Manga and Anime are also very popular. There are places in Japan that are heavily visited because they have been featured on anime television shows. For example, the shrine that is featured on the anime televisions series Lucky Star. After the shrine was featured on the show, it became a place of high attraction for tourism. This shrine is featured on the shows opening. Every time the viewer is watching the show, they have a chance of viewing the shrine. This topic was something I explored further, by doing a ten page research paper on it. In my paper I argued that different forms of media in Japan offer more than just entertainment.
Anime, manga, and trendy shows are all apart of Japans popular culture. Those who are obsessed with Japans popular culture are referred to as otaku. Overall, I noticed that anime and manga aren't as big in latin american countries.
Another thing that was interesting was how in the 1980's the cute style was used by individuals to prolong their childhood. In other words, individuals were into fancy goods, fashion, and cute writing because they felt that they had a sense of freedom. It was interesting to see how individuals in Japan would use cute hand writing. I never knew ones penmanship could be considered "cute" or Kawaii. But it was deemed cute because girls would write their characters big and round and even include little pictures of hearts or stars. I learned about this after writing an essay on the topic. This was something that I found to be very different from my hispanic culture.
