SPAN 304
Introduction to Hispanic Literature
Course description
Conducted in Spanish, the course introduces the principles of literary analysis, based on reading and discussion of Hispanic literary texts. Includes fiction, drama, essay, and poetry from Spain and Spanish America
In Spanish 304 I was introduced to a plethora of literary texts from Latin America and Spain. With this course I was able to meet Major Learning Outcome 3; Literary and Cultural Knowledge. I was introduced to the different literary movements and the authors that pertain to these different authors. For example, Romanticism, Boom, Modernism, Postmodernism, Generation of the 98, etc. Here I learned that some authors used their works to bring light to some of the issues that were occurring or occurred in their country. I got to know more about this after writing an essay about it. In this essay we had to talk about a literary movement, its significance and the esthetics the author used in his or her work. For this paper, I wrote about Rosario Ferre's narrative La Muñeca Menor. I argue that she uses her narrative to talk about the United States exploitation of Puerto Rico. From this paper I learned that the United States has exploited Puerto Rico and its resources. The United States has exploited many Latin American countries for its benefit. Latin America, since the time of Columbus, has been a victim of exploitation. This course helped me realize that many authors use their work to alleviate themselves of the pain their countries have suffered. I want to know more about other authors and their works that we didn't get to cover. I plan on doing my own research on the different authors and their work, this way I can have a better understanding.
